(26 November 2007, Hong Kong) NWS Holdings Limited (“NWS Holdings” or the “Group”; Hong Kong stock code: 0659) today announced that the Group has signed a strategic cooperation agreement for developing Haicang Port, Xiamen under the witness of Chairman Hu Jintao and French President Nicolas Sarkozy with Xiamen Municipal Government and CMA CGM S.A., whereby the parties will establish a strategic cooperation relationship in terminal construction and shipping operation as to expand the port business of Haicang Port, Xiamen.
The parties will conclude the project shortly. NWS Holdings will invest and develop deep water container terminals together with CMA CGM S.A. and Xiamen Haicang Investment General Co. in the area and target to commence operation in 2009.
Dr Henry Cheng, Chairman of NWS Holdings, said the signing of the strategic cooperation agreement is in line with the Group’s major direction in investing in infrastructure projects, “Xiamen is a core city located at the economic zone on the west coast of the Straits, and leveraging on the fine reputations of the parties, we are confident to turn Xiamen port into an international transshipment hub, and to generate considerable contributions for the Group.” Dr Cheng continued. NWS Holdings will continue to look for new projects with high growing potentials, as to grasp the abundant opportunities of the port market in Mainland China.
NWS Holdings now holds 50% interest of Xiamen New World Xiangyu Terminals Co., Ltd., which commenced operation in April 1997, and it has an annual handling capacity of one million TEUs. The signing of the agreement will strengthen the Group’s presence in the port business in Xiamen.
