(30 January 2013, Hong Kong) NWS Volunteer Alliance, the corporate volunteer team of NWS Holdings Limited (“NWS Holdings” or “the Group”; Hong Kong stock code: 659), today won the Gold Award in the Volunteer Team category for the second consecutive year at the Hong Kong Outstanding Corporate Citizenship Awards for the team’s efforts in charity work. The Group also received the Corporate Citizen logo in the Enterprise category of the awards, recognising its efforts in corporate social responsibility and its care for its staff, the community and environment.
The Hong Kong Corporate Citizenship Programme, organised by the Hong Kong Productivity Council and the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education, aims to recognise the efforts of corporations in fulfilling their corporate social responsibilities. The programme, through promotions and educational activities, raises public and corporate awareness of citizenship.
Since its establishment in 2001, NWS Volunteer Alliance has been working closely with NGOs to serve the needy, and has already contributed nearly 100,000 hours of volunteer service. It has over 2,000 members and special interest groups - including ‘haircutting’, ‘clowns and balloon modelling’ and ‘dance’ - who bring their talents and interests into service. Volunteers can learn new skills while helping others.
Apart from staff giving their time to the NWS Volunteer Alliance, the Group also supports its development through various initiatives including awards programme and matching donations to NGOs. The Group also set up a standing committee of the NWS Volunteer Alliance last year. Made up of seven experienced and enthusiastic volunteers, the Committee suggests new ideas and seeks cooperation with NGOs to develop more volunteer activities.
To promote sustainable development and be a responsible member of the community it serves, NWS Holdings strongly backs environmental protection. To spread the message of geoconservation to the public, the Group has held guided tours as part of the NWS Hong Kong Geo Wonders Hike for the last five years. These have attracted over 20,000 members of the public. The Young Ambassadors for Geoconservation training programme offers professional training and field trips in geoconservation for secondary school students. The Group also encourages staff members to be green through a series of in-house environmentally themed activities.
