NWS Holdings corporate volunteer team wins Hong Kong Outstanding Corporate Citizenship Gold Award three years in running

(21 January 2014, Hong Kong) NWS Volunteer Alliance (“the Alliance”), the corporate volunteer team of NWS Holdings Limited (“NWS Holdings” or “the Group”; Hong Kong stock code: 659), today received the Gold Award in the volunteer team category at the 4th Hong Kong Corporate Citizenship Programme. This is the third consecutive year that the Alliance received this award, representing public recognition of the team’s long-standing and concerted efforts in community service. The Group also received the Merit Award in the enterprise category, while its member companies, New World First Bus Services Limited and Citybus Limited garnered the Bronze Award, and Hip Hing Construction Company Limited, Vibro (H.K.) Limited and New World First Ferry Services Limited received the Corporate Citizenship Logos. Upholding principles and responsibilities of good corporate citizenship, the Group has demonstrated its full commitment to making the best use of its business strengths and resources to contribute to the community.

The Hong Kong Corporate Citizenship Programme, jointly organised by the Hong Kong Productivity Council and the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education, aims at recognising the efforts of enterprises and organisations in fulfilling their corporate social responsibility and integrating it into their business model and daily operation. The programme, through a series of educational activities and workshops, raises public and corporate awareness of citizenship.

Mr Tsang Yam Pui, Executive Director and Chairman of the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee of NWS Holdings, said, “Since its inception in 2001, NWS Volunteer Alliance has gained wide support from all levels of staff and contributed over 110,000 hours of volunteer service for the elderly, children, youth and various underprivileged groups. We are proud of the unwavering effort of our volunteers and will continue to support them by making the best use of our resources to serve the community.”

With a clear vision of “We serve our society with what we know, what we have and what our heart has told us”, the 2,300-strong Alliance serves different underprivileged groups in the past 12 years. The Alliance also forms interest groups to provide diversified community services, such as haircutting, clown performances, balloon modeling and dancing. A handicraft team was also formed earlier this year to bring volunteers’ talents and interests into service.

The Group is highly devoted to community service and has closely worked with various non-governmental organisations on large-scale and long-term community programmes. Over 140 community programmes were held in 2013, including home visits, mentorship and environmental friendliness programmes. The NWS Holdings Charity Foundation, set up in 2006 with an accumulated donation of over HK$13 million to-date, recently donated HK$3 million to Hong Kong Young Women’s Christian Association for setting up an elderly day care centre named YWCA NWS Y-Care Centre in Fanling. The Centre is supported by a new service coach and Alliance’s volunteering work to address the pressing needs for elderly day care services in North District.
