(3 August 2015, Hong Kong) Underprivileged men living in Sham Shui Po are being helped by a new self-improvement programme launched on Saturday by NWS Holdings Limited (“NWS Holdings” or “the Group”; Hong Kong stock code: 659) and the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society.
The programme, called “Brightening My Life’s Path” Men’s Club, helps men aged 40 to 65 build their social networks and acquire new skills, in the hope that they will then use their confidence and abilities to help other people in the community.
“The poverty problem in Sham Shui Po has drawn public attention across the city,” said Judy Chan, Head of Service at the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society, at the launch ceremony on 1 August. “Nevertheless, we noticed that there is a group of experienced and talented people whom we believed to be valuable social assets.”
“We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to NWS Holdings for sharing our vision and joining hands with us to implement this programme. Only through enhancing their self-worth and skills can they make good use of their experience and talent to make a contribution.”
“Brightening My Life’s Path” Men’s Club is a three-year programme sponsored by NWS Holdings Charities Foundation. In the first phase of the programme, participants are helped to establish their own support networks and develop a habit of life-long learning, by taking part in different workshops and recreational activities. To strengthen their sense of belonging to their community, they will be given chance to care for the needy by engaging in voluntary work and organising a number of community activities with NWS Volunteer Alliance, the corporate volunteer team of NWS Holdings.
Shelia Tang, General Manager of the Corporate Communication of NWS Holdings said, “The Group has been striving to utilise its resources and corporate volunteer team to support different community projects to encourage more people to take up community service. The NWS Volunteer Alliance was established in 2001, and its members have built up a great deal of volunteer experience. They are passing on their skills to the participants in the programme, in the hope that they will then use their own strengths to help others.”
As a caring company, NWS Holdings has partnered with more than 50 non-profit organisations to implement an array of strategic and long-term community programmes. Our corporate volunteer team, NWS Volunteer Alliance, has contributed over 130,000 hours of volunteer service since its inception in 2001.
