(21 February 2016, Hong Kong) NWS Holdings Limited (“NWS Holdings” or the “Group”; Hong Kong stock code: 659) yesterday held NWS Caring Day 2016 to celebrate the 13th anniversary of its listing and promote environmental protection. Held at Shatin Community Green Station, the event under the theme of “ArtCycling” engaged some 300 NWS corporate volunteers as well as children and families from Tin Shui Wai, Sham Shui Po, Yau Tsim Mong, Wong Tai Sin and Tuen Mun in eco-handcrafting. At the event, the Group announced a new environmental education programme for grassroots families, in partnership with the Christian Family Service Centre (“CFSC”). This one-year project is expected to involve more than 600 people in activities that encourage reduce, recycle and reuse approach to waste management.
Tsang Yam Pui, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee of NWS Holdings, said, “The principles of sustainability, including caring for community and environment, are deeply ingrained in NWS Holdings and integral to the success of our business. ‘NWS Caring Day’ is our annual signature volunteering event, and this year we have focused on environmental protection, particularly waste management, which remains a pressing environmental challenge to our community. Through this event we aim to encourage members of the public to be creative and have fun while learning about living a greener lifestyle and playing their part in environmental sustainability.”
Earlier this year the Group has launched a new database and volunteer management system to manage its large and expanding volunteer force. Corporate volunteers can log in anywhere and anytime to enroll in volunteer activities and specify their particular skills and areas of interest, enabling tailor-made and effective deployment of volunteers.
Apart from the event co-organizer Christian Family Service Centre, four non-profit organizations, namely Hans Andersen Club, the Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service Joyful Family Canteen, the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society West Kowloon Centre Sham Shui Po (West) Integrated Family Service Centre and Tuen Mun (East) Integrated Family Service Centre of Social Welfare Department, participated in the event.
Professor Alex Kwan Yui Huen, Board Vice-chairman of Christian Family Service Centre, said, “Christian Family Service Centre is pleased to join hands with NWS Holdings on social caring project at our Shatin Community Green Station, which is the first Community Green Station established by the Environmental Protection Department to strengthen environmental education through collaboration with the business sector and local communities. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our organizer NWS Holdings and social service counterparts for joining this meaningful event.”
NWS Caring Day 2016 featured a variety of upcycling art workshops, where participants can make handicraft using recycled items and experience green living. The Group’s corporate volunteer team, the NWS Volunteer Alliance, ran workshops on making firecrackers with used red packets, designing bracelets from plastic bottles and nail polish, and sewing multi-purpose bags made from out-of-date advertising banners. To spread love and care, the Group also collected Chinese New Year candies from staff members to give away to underprivileged children taking part in the event.
As part of the joint effort to promote green living in the community, NWS Holdings and CFSC jointly introduce a full-year “ArtCycling” programme in which corporate volunteers will run green education activities highlighting the importance of reusing items and reducing waste. A series of environmental art activities will include making musical instruments and wooden benches from discarded materials and donation of recyclable or used items through CFSC’s recycling platform.
